Arundhati Bhattacharya (DIN: 02011213),Padma Shri awardee and one of India’s most admired corporate leaders, is a trailblazer whose career spans banking, technology, governance and public service. In 2025, she was conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, for her exceptional contribution to the field of trade and industry.

A postgraduate in English and an Associate Member of the Indian Institute of Bankers, Ms. Bhattacharya began her journey with the State Bank of India and went on to build a career of more than four decades across banking, finance, technology and institutional leadership. Her deep understanding of the banking sector, combined with her sharp appreciation of technology-led transformation, enabled her to leave a lasting imprint on India’s financial landscape. In 2013, she made history by becoming the first woman to chair the State Bank of India, the country’s largest bank and one of its most iconic institutions. Her appointment also marked a defining moment for women in Indian corporate leadership, as she became the first woman to head a Fortune 500 company in India. During her tenure from 2013 to 2017, she led SBI through a period of significant transformation, with a strong focus on modernisation, employee welfare, inclusion and customer-centric banking.

Her tenure at SBI was marked by several progressive initiatives, including the introduction of sabbatical leave for women employees, a forward-looking policy aimed at supporting women through important life stages. She also championed technology-led banking reforms and helped steer the institution through a changing financial environment with clarity, resilience and conviction.

Her leadership earned her widespread global recognition. She has featured among the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women by Fortune and Forbes, was named in Fortune’s World’s 50 Greatest Leaders, and ranked No. 1 in Fortune India’s Most Powerful Women in Business list for multiple consecutive years. She was also honoured with the Global Economy Prize in 2017, the Business Leader of the Year award at The Asian Awards 2018, and lifetime achievement recognitions from the Financial Express Group and Zee Marathi.

Following her distinguished banking career, Ms. Bhattacharya has continued to contribute to public policy, governance and institutional development. She has been nominated by the Government of India to several eminent committees, including the Lokpal Search Committee, Padma Awardees Selection Committee, SEBI’s Mutual Fund Advisory Committee and the National Coal Index Committee.

In 2018, she joined the Board of Reliance Industries Limited as an Independent Director, bringing with her deep expertise in financial services, governance, people leadership and large-scale transformation. At Reliance Industries Limited, she is a Member of the Stakeholders’ Relationship Committee, Environmental, Social and Governance Committee, and Human Resources, Nomination and Remuneration Committee.

In 2020, she took on a new leadership chapter in the technology sector, leading the India and South Asia operations of Salesforce, a global leader in customer relationship management technology. Her transition from banking to enterprise technology reflects her ability to lead across sectors and guide organisations through digital transformation at scale.

She is also the author of Indomitable: A Working Woman’s Notes on Work, Life and Leadership, an inspiring memoir that captures her journey from a young professional in banking to the helm of India’s largest bank and beyond. The book offers candid reflections on ambition, resilience, leadership, family, inclusion and navigating a traditionally male-dominated corporate world.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ms. Bhattacharya is associated with initiatives that support and empower persons with disabilities, working towards their fuller integration into society. Her interests include reading and travelling.
